Very simple....THEY STAY ALIVE ON RESERVED FOOD MATERIAL (in this case the reserved food material is in the swollen stem). But orchids do die in harsh conditions. Its like survival of the fittest. You can imagine, one fruit of an orchid can have 1000s and 1000s of seeds, but you dont get to see so many plants or seedlings around.... the answer is more than 80% of them dont survive !! Pankaj
