For Kutchh I cant say because the water there is saline. In Rajasthan ofcourse there are orchids. There are very few orchids which grow in desert but not found in India. Takala is urdu word which also means left over or abandoned. But yes Bald fits well. That area was ruled by Turkish for some time too. >From wikipedia: The name may be an Areeb Uyghur borrowing of the Arabic tark, "to leave alone/out/behind, relinquish, abandon" + makan, "place". Another plausible explanation suggests it is derived from Turki taqlar makan, describing "the place of ruins". By the way you had an interesting question, if the orchids were found there or not? The answer is may be because no one went there to search as it is not supposed to be easy to explore, there is scarcity of water and other resources. I just had a look on google earth, Chinese have apparently constructed road through the desert as well as on all sides and there are some streams in the desert..... could harbour something interesting. Atleast Goodyera procera. Pankaj
