The Plant List like in many cases seems to be totally confused, as it relies on multiple databases. The two genera are easily differentiated on the basis of simple versus compound leaves, but there is no such consistency in The Plant List: Mahonia aquifolium is listed under Berberis aquifolium Mahonia leschenaultii is listed under Berberis leschenaultii
