In Gujarati, ખપાટ (rather than ખાપટ) is the generic name for *Abutilon* spp. The latter is closer to the Kachchhi name ખાપટો.
*A. persicum* is distinguished as ખાજવણી ખપાટ. It has been documented by Jayakrishna Indraji Thakar in his treatise વનસ્પતિશાસ્ત્ર (published in 1910). He deduced that this epithet is indicative of the itchy sensation caused by the viscid secretion of the gland-tipped hairs in this species.
