Hello friends, All of us are extremely interested in Lepidoptera, the scalywings (moths and butterflies) but, except for the handful of experts on our groups, we usually know little about them. Very few articles are available on the net which give you a good idea about how these insects use their bodies.
Since I could not find the information I needed, I decided to write an encyclopaedic article about the external morphology of Lepidoptera for Wikipedia. You can read this article here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/External_morphology_of_Lepidoptera The article has been written as much as possible in easy to read style. Adequate links are provided so that you can explore this subject more. Very importantly, the article has been referenced so that it is both authoritative and you can check, from the original sources, the facts for yourself. There are as many as 59 images to help you understand the morphology better. If you find any section difficult to understand or wish to give suggestions for improvement or would like something to be expanded, please feel free to do so. I do hope you get as much fun from reading it as I got from writing it. Of people known to us, I must thank Shyamal Lakshminarayan , Vijay Barve, Kishen Das and Krushnamegh Kunte and for their help and suggestions besides Wikipedia Users Stemonitis, Robert Nash (Notafly), Megan McCarty, Bugboy_52.40, Ruigeroeland, A_little_insignificant and others for their contributions, help and moral support. I have included the indiantreepix and wildflower group as addresssees since the Lepidopterans are involved in a major way in plant-insect interactions as pests and pollinators.
