Subject: Why is Chris Chadwell confirming and sometimes questioning
identifcations of ALL postings for a species?

I am gradually going through each species covered in ALL the genera
represented in the Himalaya currently
posted within eFI, that I have knowledge of.

In some cases, there are only one or two entries, so this is quick to do.

For others there are a lot of entries - up to double figures. After the
first few being correctly identified, there is
a temptation to assume they all are and not bother with the rest but OFTEN
it turns out that one or two are not
correctly identified.

This has been true for Anemone rivularis - a species widespread in the
Himalaya, which I first came across at
Manali in H.P. Also seen it in the Eastern Himalaya in Bhutan. It is not
recorded for Kashmir but is known in
Ladakh.

The entry photographed by Suresh in Paddar Valley, does not fit with
A.rivularis - seems likely to be a form of
A.rupicola, which is known from Kashmir.

Flowers of the Himalaya gives a distribution of Kashmir to SW China but
although Ladakh is part of the Indian
State of Jammu & Kashmir, it would have been better to have put Ladakh to
SW China.

*This illustrates the principle that one should ALWAYS check. And IF a
plant has definitely been misidentified*
*or is doubtful in the eFI data-base (or any other data-base, on-line or
printed) then attention needs to be drawn*
*to these errors and where necessary, corrected. *

*ACCURACY and RELIABILITY are CRITICAL for any data-base.*

Best Wishes,

Chris Chadwell
