Thanks to Mr Rajaram ji for posting this not so common Stereopermum species. Stereospermum species have always fascinated me. I went through Dr. Almeida's flora and Brandis in detail. Brandis' Photograph also matches well with the posted pics as far as the colour of the flowers is concerned. Dr Almeida's flora, Vol III pg 456 mentions the earlier names as Bignonia chelonoides Linn. f., Bignonia suaveolens Roxb., Tecoma suaveolens G. Don, Heteropphragma suaveolens Dalz. &Gibs.
The leaves have the acuminate, pinnate looks like 3- 4 pairs matching the species the following is the flowers description from pg : 456 " Flowers sweetly fragrant, in large lax trichotomous viscidly hairy panicles. Calyx 9 mm long, campanulate, viscidly hairy; lobes 3-5, short, broad. Corolla 2.5 - 4 cm long, infundibuliform, dull purple, pubescent outside, bearded inside on the lower, glabrous on the upper side; limb oblique, 2 lipped; lobes rounded, crisped- crenate, the 3 lower lobes longer than the 2 upper. Filaments without a tuft of hair at the base. Capsules 0.3- 0.6 meter long and 2 cm broad, straight, cylindric, slightly ribbed, somewhat rough with elevated whitish specks, valves thick, hard." Therefore I agree with Dr. Vijayasankar ID as these pics being those of Stereospermum. chelonoides. But however the syn of S. colais is not mentioned by Brandis nor By Dr. Almeida. S. colais is mentioned as earliar synonyms with S. personatum and the variations. regards, Rashida. On Tue, May 25, 2010 at 2:12 PM, J.M.
