The genus name *Arachis *stems from a-rachis (Greek, meaning without spine) in reference to the absence of erect branches. The specific epithet * hypogaea* from hupo-gé (Greek, meaning below earth) and relates to the gynophore (flower stalk or peg) that grows downward into the earth so that the pod develops underground.
