Dear All, I partially subscribe to the explanation given by Dr Gurcharan Singh on why Parthenium is called congress grass. Parthenium came in purportedly with the large wheat consignment from the US as part of the PL 480 scheme consequent to the famine of 1967-69 which had devastated the country. The wide and speedy spread of the weed round the country was likened to that of the then congress party and hence the name congress grass. regards cheriyan
