Webster (in Pacific Science 40: 94. 1986) indicates that the populations in
Asian regions including India and Sri Lanka are *P. simplex* Retz. and
separable from *P. virgatus* which appear to be restricted to Pacific
Islands.*P. simplex* has strongly papillate ovaries and entire female
disc, whereas
*P. virgatus* has smooth ovaries and irregularly dissected female disc.
