Dear. Ms. Nalini,
Your answer was too much philosophical I assume. As the name suggests,
foetida means fowl smelling, so it doesnt matter who is smelling it, it will
smell foul. Just because of the biochemical excretion from the glandular
hairs which are present on the plant in foetida but absent from edulis.
My issue was more of the identification. My plant ripens but never changes
its colour, where as the assume same foetida ripens and changes orange and
tastes sweet. That proves that the species can be different atleast on the
variety level.
There is one such example in orchid, Habenaria gibsoni var. foetida which
smells like decomposing flesh or lets put straight, human shit, and then
there is Habenaria gibsoni var. gibsoni, which doesnt smell that way....I am
sure there would be many more similar examples.
