Remainds me of Berberis vulgaris (Gewöhnliche Berberitze) which is grown along 
the fences. The thorns keep the pedestrians away from the garden. But the 
children pluck the berries which taste sweetsour when ripe. The berries are 
rich on Vitamin C and berreis or jam is sold at x'mas basars.
