As this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva the carving may be of a Bael tree 
(bilva), *Aegle marmelos (Rutaceae)*
At the bottom is a hand perhaps plucking a leaf for worship. Bael leaves 
are used as offerings to Lord Shiva.
