A useful preliminary guide to identifying members of the genus, Ammannia aquatic plant is the characteristic opposite (decussate) arrangement of leaves, a feature shared with many aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, possibly representing an evolutionary optimization for maximizing light capture under water. The plants are further distinguished by their slender, often quadrangular stems, which in many species acquire a striking reddish or purplish hue, particularly under strong light conditions.
Among the Indian representatives, Ammannia baccifera is especially distinctive. The specific epithet baccifera derives from Latin, meaning “berry-bearing” (bacca = berry, ferre = to bear). True to its name, this species bears numerous bright red, sessile, berry-like capsules that are attached directly to the stems without pedicels. These conspicuous fruits, along with the reddish stems, make A. baccifera relatively easy to recognize in the field. Concise Diagnostic Key (common Indian Ammannia species) A. baccifera – Reddish stems; numerous sessile, berry-like capsules along the stems. A. multiflora – Flowers in dense terminal or axillary clusters; capsules smaller and not berry-like; stems usually greenish. A. auriculata – Leaves with conspicuous auricles (ear-like lobes) at the base; flowers solitary or few; stems often purplish.
