Dear friends, Two varieties of *Barleria strigosa* are put as synonyms of *Barleria terminalis* There are two *Barleria caerulea *(described by two authors) ... they are separately synonyms of *B. terminalis* and *B. strigosa*.
*Barleria terminalis* Nees Synonyms: *Barleria polystachya* Nees *Barleria strigosa* Willd. var. *polystachya* (Nees) C.B. Clarke *Barleria strigosa* Willd. var. *terminalis* (Nees) C.B. Clarke *Barleria caerulea* sensu Graham Flowering & Fruiting: October - March. Habitat: *Along streams* in higher altitudes. Distribution: Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Orrisa. Shrubs, perennial, erect, up to 2 m high. Stem terete ... Flowers 6 – 8 cm long, in *terminal crowded simple dichasial cymes*; bracts elliptic-lanceolate ... Outer sepals ovate-lanceolate, subequal, ciliate at margins, acute, often faintly 2-toothed at apex *Barleria strigosa* Willd. Synonyms: *Barleria polytricha* Wall. *Barleria caerulea* Roxb. *Barleria macrophylla* B. Heyne ex C.B. Clarke *Barleria strigosa* Willd. var. *subglabra* Kuntze Flowering & Fruiting: August – March. Habitat: *Undergrowth in moist deciduous forests*; also grown in gardens, up to 1400 m. Distribution: throughout India Shrubs, perennial, erect, c. *1 m high*. Stems obtusely angular, strigose ... *Flowers few*, in compact scorpioid cymes, axillary; bracts ovate-lanceolate, ciliate-dentate at margins, strigose ... Outer sepals broadly ovate-lanceolate, subequal, ciliate-dentate at margins, acute at apex, *prominently palmately reticulate-veined* .............................................................................................................. The planted posted, I recollect was found in growing as a large colony under large trees at the Panorama Point, Matheran ... December month ... the area was dry. I am almost sure - there would be no streams flowing even during wet season in that particular area. The flowers of the posted plant are found to be one or two, among "lesser crowded" bracts and sepals ... (most of the illustrations and pictures of *B. terminalis* show flowers among large cluster of bracts and sepals) The posted plant seem to show its outer sepals, prominently veined (though not sure how does palmately reticulate-veined look like) Therefore considering the plant to be *Barleria strigosa*. .............................................................................................................
