Thanks a ton for the suggestion.
I think it is a Brunsfelsia americana, though I saw it in the daytime and so
did not notice any fragrance. Also there were no fruit to be seen.
 I have seen the Brunsfelsia pauciflora on a clove plantation in  Cumini,
Kerala and on a coffee estate in Coorg. What a wonderful perfume the shrub/
small tree gave out!
