Given that my favourite topic (I am aware that plant names are boring for
most people) generate little reaction from the "silent" majority, I wonder
if there is a way of sending some messages to all the moderators at once.
If I can only post discussion starters in the usual manner, is there a
limit to the text size?
Realizing that the Google group site is still in its beta phase, I am
attempting to attach a file. This way the curious can have a look.
Title: Bamboos-note-on-Indian-names1

Hi all,
The purpose of nomenclature is to give a name or some names to each specific plant. Species have names made of 2 words, cultivated varieties have by necessity more that 2 words because they belong to a species first. In vernacular nomenclature it is no different. Two different plants cannot have the same name, unless one applies a generic name in the absence of a better and more specific name. If generic names are applied to say 6 different plants it is becoming very confusing. Introducing translations, transliterations and scripts in the picture and total chaos is the result. So taking bamboos as an example eflora should list the following first (assuming that I haven't made a mistake) because all (or most) of these are generic names. It is hard to judge because there are only 2 species with such sets of names in the database so far, no doubt compiled by our greatly estimated Dinesh. Then these generic  names should be removed from the specific names lists. "Now here is the rub". More appropriate names must be found to fill the gaps. Unfortunately one cannot turn to dictionaries because generally they are rather general in their coverage. If one does not know, one has to ask some expert that knows, so please start hassling your friends, colleages etc. I do not speak any of the Indian languages but 95% of you do speak at least 2. As I have some superficial understanding of many European languages, Chinese and Japanese, all of you would have similar affinities with several Indian languages. If you wish to promote your culture abroad you can only rely on yourselves because those of us with the best intentions in the world cannot do it for you... and poor Dinesh cannot do it all on his own, he has to have a life. Cheerios.

Bamboo in Indian languages.
Assamese: বংশ baansh •
Bengali:
বাঁশ baansha •
Gujarati:
બામ્બુ baambu, વાંસ vaans •

Manipuri:

Marathi:
बांबू baamboo, कळक kalaka, कळंक kalanka, वेळू velu •
Nepalese:
बाँस् baans •
Pali:

Tamil:
ங்கில்  Munkil •
Telugu:
వెదురు  Veduru •
Urdu:
بانس baans, بمبو bambu, نبس buns;

If you agree with this concept I will try to add the phonetic typing. This allows the recovery of the scripted name from the phonetic, with the appropriate software of course. Example:  बांस baans, बम्बू bambu, बंस buns   becomes   बांस  (baans) Bānsa, बम्बू  (bambu)  Bambū, बंस  (buns) Bansa.

Once the generic names are removed we are left with:
