According to the text book i follow the ID KEY to *Solanum* genus is "Leaves *simple*, lobed or pinnatifid". (Ref. "Plant Groups" by H. Mukherji; publisher: NEW CENTRAL BOOK AGENCY (P) Ltd.; 1981 edition, reprinted 2005; page no. 1025.) Does that imply that taxonomists initially thought of tomato plants having simple leaves? Or the above mentioned college text book contains wrong data?
