"Dear Dr. Swamy,
This is Pteridium revolutum (Blume) Nakai, which occurs commonly
almost throughout India. You will find it referred to as P. aquilinum
sometimes, especially in 19th Century literature, or in works that are not
aware of modern fern taxonomy - but that species is European and African,
and not present in India.
Both species are well known to be toxic to cattle, humans etc. and a
lot has been published on the effects of the named alkaloids present - e.g.
bovine Haematonurea and cancers etc.
      Best wishes,
          Chris Fraser-Jenkins, Kathmandu."
