EDN International Network Update

Dear Friends,

On Earth Day 2005, millions of people from all over the world will join
symbolically in a massive call to create healthier environments for
children. Healthy environments for children are a right not a luxury, and
yet children all over the world are dying from polluted environments and
lack of basic resources such as clean water and clean air.

Join us on 22 April and make your voice heard!

Open to everyone and owned by no one, Earth Day is a chance for people to
drop their differences and act together to create a better future for all of
us.

EARTH DAY AROUND THE WORLD!

Here are just some of the things being planned for this Earth Day:

KOREA: 10,000 people will take to the streets in a street festival in
Seoul. Major streets in the city will be shut down to cars, as people
celebrate the environment, and call for more sustainable transportation in
their city.

AUSTRALIA: In Sydney, Australia, Earth Day 2005 will be a big day at Mermaid
Pool. The community is now in its third year of restoring the beautiful
Mermaid Pool which is about 3 miles inland from Manly Beach, one of
Australia's most high profile surfing beaches. 'The Return of the Mermaids'
restoration project has already removed 5 tons of dumped material as well as
thousands of noxious weeds. Earth Day 2005 will be marked by volunteer
participation from hundreds of community members, to continue the
rehabilitation process by unchoking the creek line from exotic water weeds
and cleaning up plastic bottles, shopping trolleys, and other discarded
junk.

CHILE: There will be a huge "Mother Earth" concert for all of the Southern
coastal rural communities in Chile. Several activities involving children
will lead up to the concert, including tree plantings and writing and
drawing contests. The concert will be dedicated to all of the kids and
young people of the region, as a symbol of the hope they represent for
conserving the environment in the future.

SOUTH AFRICA: Organizers in South Africa are involved in a campaign to stop
the further expansion of industrial, mono-culture timber plantations. In
Johannesburg, a memorandum will be sent urging government officials to abort
the planned expansion of a regional pulp mill that annually produces more
than 500,000 tons of pulp.

IRELAND: 1,000 organic and conventional farmers, hotels, restaurants, pubs,
retailers, schools and homes across Ireland are planning to display GMO
(Genetically Modified Organisms)-free zone signs and simultaneously declare
their lands and premises GMO-free at 2pm on Friday 22 April, Earth Day 2005.

CANADA: In Quebec and Montreal, Canada there will be a Computer and Cell
Phone Collection Day. This campaign/festival will bring together
environmental organizations, civic groups, and technical experts, to educate
the public about toxic e-waste in Computers and Cell Phones, provide a place
for people to bring their old equipment, and MAKE RECYCLING FUN!
