Osborne says deficit cuts will promote 'fairer society' 17 August 2010 Last updated at 18:25 GMT George Osborne says the government's plans for tackling Britain's deficit will promote a "fairer society". Speaking at news agency Bloomberg's London offices, the chancellor outlined how the general public can help to decide where cuts in spending should be made. He told The City that Britain can move towards recovery without sacrificing growth or becoming less fair. The government will also refocus public spending on areas that will boost the UK's long-term economic success, he added. Labour argues that the coalition's plans will hit the poor hardest.
