She sees no evil, hears no evil. Gone is the cowboy diplomacy of John Foster Dulles or the highly rationalized diplomacy of Henry Kissinger. She is very much down to earth and wouldn't hurt an ant. She knows that Indonesia is is great trouble, needing what the old say- ing suggested: a friend in need is a friend indeed. She is so smooth and refined that I failed to see any persuasion towards better- ment in politics, economy and social affairs suggested to Indonesian authorities, let alone mild criticism. She knows that at this juncture, Indonesians are too sen- sitive to be engaged in an argumentative enterprise. Praises, praises and nothing but praises. I am just hoping that what she didn't do publicly has been done "tete a tete" with President Habibie and his cabinet. In Indonesian language we would call her "Mother Albright" (Ibu Albright) and she did that in her great diplomacy. Even Xanana Gusmao changed his position, he no longer demanded the direct independence, he now prefers gradual independence through "representative consultation" like Indonesia has been demanding. On rule and law and the crusade against corruption she failed to pinpoint the uniqueness in Indonesia where both our constitution and criminal law are still based on the dinosaur pre-Magna Carta jurisprudencies which would never achieve the coveted American Bill of Rights which has been overdue by now. In Indonesia the German words "das Sollen und das Sein" towards perfection seemed to be perpetuated into eternity. H.S.
