Finnegan: Chaos, Butterfly, and Indonesian Crisis
I have read many articles pondering about the genesis of the crisis that
is engulfing Indonesia at the moment. Many have gone into great
technical details and analysis about the social, political and economic
origins of the crisis. Me? I am a KIS man. I just like to keep it simple
and being a devotee of the Chaos theory, I am a firm believing that
simple decision often led to momentous consequences. Just find the
butterfly that caused the hurricane.
Unfortunately, The Indonesian butterflies are not free.
Jan 1958:
Nasution at a speech he gave at Magelang suggesting a dual role for the
military. A military force and a social/political role. Beginning of
"dwifungsi" doctrine. I don t really need to bore the readers of this
forum with full graphical details of the consequences of this
DwiFungsi doctrine. Enough has been written about it already and
enough trees have died for it already. I just want to add that THIS
DECISION LED THE PLUNDERING OF INDONESIA BY THE MILITARY
July 1959 :
Sukarno with influence and full backing from the ABRI, dissolved the
Constituent Assembly and adopted by decree the Constitution of 1945 (UUD
45); Beginning of the Presidential rule by decree and later in the year
his Guided Democracy which is a better sounding name for
Dictatorship . Sukarno started this but Suharto was the master. He
basically devised and put in practice a perfect system of government by
decree, rubber stamping and subjugated Parliaments and guided
democracy of make believed political parties, Golkar etc. THIS DECISION
LED TO THE PLUNDERING OF INDONESIA BY THE POLITICIANS
October 1988:
Suharto regime with the full backing of his technocrats decided to allow
anyone with enough capital to run a chook raffle to start a bank. It was
dressed up as major financial sector reform and liberalisation
initiative. The number of banks increased from 61 in 1988 to close to
120 in 1991, and to 230 in mid-1990s. It was Woody Guthrie who wrote the
immortal line that: Some rob you by the gun, some rob you by the pen .
In this case, the banks were treated by the so called Bankers as their
own private piggy bank, sucking in the ordinary people money, and like
magician making them disappeared without a trace. It was legalised
daylight robbery. THIS DECISION LED TO THE PLUNDERING OF INDONESIA BY
THE BUSINESSMEN IN SUIT.
June 1999:
General Election. This is the mother of all butterflies. If Indonesia
don t get it right this time. THIS DECISION, LITERALLY, COULD LED TO
THE PLUNDERING OF INDONESIA BY THE INDONESIAN PEOPLE UNTIL THERE IS NO MORE
INDONESIA. A simple decision really.
