"If the UN sees, that the security condition is not conducive for the ballot, the UN secretary general could decide to postpone it," Tarmidzi said. He however reminded that the UN Assessment Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) should be neutral and should not take sides. The agreement signed by Indonesia, Portugal and the UN secretary general in New York ststes that the UNAMET must carry its tasks fairly to accelerate the long-awaited peaceful solution to the East Timor issue, he said. "UNAMET should not interpret the agreement based on its own interests. The team must also cooperate with the Indonesian side," he added. The Australian daily, Sydney Morning Herald, in a front-page story quoted UN sources as saying that the direct ballot in East Timor is likely to be postponed for three weeks from Aug 8 to Aug 29. Schedule Tarmidzi further said that the UN has set a schedule for the process. The socialization of the concept of wide-ranging autonomy offered by the government to East Timor is to be conducted from May 10 to Aug 5, while voters registration is to be done from June 13 to Aug 5. The announcement of the voters list is to be made from July 18- 23 while the campaign period is to be held July 20 to Aug 5. Aug 6-7 will be the "cooling off" period before the actual ballot on Aug 8.
