UNAMET Always Supports Reconciliation Efforts - Spokesman

Dili, E Timor, June 16 (ANTARA) - The United Nations Assesment
Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) will always support efforts made
by East Timorese bishops, Basilio do Nascimento and Carlos
Ximenes Belo, to reconcile conficting camps in the territory,
its spokesman said here Wednesday.

"UNAMET will always support the reconciliation efforts initiated
by the two Catholic church leaders in East Timor because the UN
sees reconciliation as the best way to put an end to the
political conflict (in the province) which has claimed many
lives," David Wimhurst said.

UNAMET's support to the reconciliation efforts is a commitment
of the UN and the reconciliation applies not only to those in
the political elite but to entire people of East Timor as well,
he said.

Toward that end, the UN come to East Timor to help conduct the
direct ballot on the future of East Timor on August 8 and will
stay in the territory until the post-ballot period to help
reconcile the people of East Timor, he said.

The first phase of the two-day dialog and reconciliation among
East Timorese figures with varying political views ended on Sept
10 with a peace communique calling on pro-independence and pro-
integration groups to try to create peace for the East
Timorese's welfare.
