Be Careful With Foreign Social Workers

Dili, June 21 (ANTARA) - The Governor of East Timor, Abilio Jose
Osorio Soares, appealed to the East Timorese people to be
careful with foreign social workers who perform their duties in
East Timor.

"Alertness is necessary, so that no undesired things will
happen," he told newsmen here Monday.

He made the statement in connection with the detention of two
Australian social workers in Kosovo, because they acted as spies
for NATO.

"It is possible that spying by foreign social workers happens in
East Timor, which has so far attracted the international world.
For that reason, the East Timorese people should always be
alert," he said.

"I presume that what happens in Kosovo can also happen in East
Timor. If there are some UN team members who perform duties
which are different from those set by the UN, it is possible
that it can happen in East Timor," he said.

He noted that such an action is wrong, and a stern response
should be taken so that it does not harm the East Timorese
people.

He appealed to all East Timorese people, officials, and the
local administration of East Timor to assist with UN duties
there and not to let spying happen.

As reported by Antara, the mission of the Australian Foreign
Minister, Alexander Downer, failed to release two Australian
citizens who are detained in Yugoslavia on spying charges.

The two Australian social workers provided assistance for
refugees. They worked with CARE for Kosovo.

Antara has also reported that a consultant form CARE for
Indonesia, who worked in East Timor, is being prevented from
going abroad. The worker has no proper document to stay in Dili.

The prevention is believed to have something to do with the
community clashes in Maubara, and the abuse of US-aided rice
distributed through CARE.
