E Timor: Portugal To Avoid Political Pressures To RI

Lisbon, Aug 11 (ANTARA)-Portugal should avoid political pressure
on the Indonesian government in the East Timor issue, during the
tripartite talks which will be held in Jakarta on Aug 12-13, an
analyst said.

"East Timor after the popular consultation will still need
Indonesia's role. It will be better for Portugal to make a
rational approach, that its good relations with Indonesia is not
only (relations) with East Timor," President of the Asia-Portugal
Association, Prof. Nuno Rocha said here late Tiesday.

Portugal, he said, has placed too many political pressures against
Indonesia, especially regarding security assurances towards the
popular concultation set for August 30.

"Based on the May Agreement in New York, Indonesia has been put in
a difficult position because of it responsibility (to maintain)
security in East Timor," Rocha added.

In its concept for East Timor development, Portugal wants
Indonesia to give its support in terms of finance during the
transition period, if the East Timorese refuse the autonomy
package.

In addition, Portugal wants to restore its diplomatic relations
with Indonesia, soon after the implementation of popular
consultation.

"It will be better for Portugal to focus on restoration of
diplomatic relations with Indonesia, so automatically the East
Timor problem can be settled," Rocha said.

The concept of wide-ranging autonomy for East Timor agreed to on
May 5, has provided opportunities for the international community,
if we want the resolution for East Timor," Rocha said.

Meanwhile, the Portugal Foreign Affairs Ministry announced that
the special envoy for the East Timor issue, Fernando Neves, will
lead the government delegation on the tripartite talks in Jakarta.
