Pro-Indonesia militia chieftain heads to Jakarta

DILI, East Timor, Sept 4 (AFP) - Pro-Indonesia milita chief Eurico Guterres
left East Timor Saturday after announcing his group accepted the overwhelming
vote in favour of independence for the troubled territory.

Guterres flew out of Dili's Comoro airport and was heading to Jakarta, but
told reporters he planned to return to the strife-torn territory Sunday.

"I am leaving for Jakarta but I will be back tomorrow," Guterres said after
earlier vowing to stop any East Timorese leaders from leaving the territory.

He said his camp accepted the outcome of the vote but warned "there is still
the problem of the 21 percent," the number who voted for autonomy under
Indonesia.

Militia violence erupted here Saturday with the UN office in East Timor
(UNAMET) being forced to abandon five towns, evacuating more than 140 staff.

Guterres is commander of the pro-Indonesia Aitarak militia which has waged a
campaign of terror in Dili over recent months.

He said earlier this week his group would respect the outcome of the vote but
observers have noted he has contradicted himself in the past.

In Monday's ballot, organized by the United Nations, 78.5 percent of the
votes were against an offer of autonomy within Indonesia, according to the
United Nations.

A total of 94,388 people voted in favour of autonomy and 344,580 voted
against. The turnout was 98.6 percent.
