PRESIDENT UNVEILS ALLEGED RIOT MASTERMINDS

Canberra, Jan 26 (ANTARA) - Presiden Abdurrahman Wahid has
accused a small group in the military in cooperation with some
national businessman of having manipulated various riots with an
aim to disturb his government.

By that way, the masterminds considered that the government
under his leadership could be detacted and made unsteady, the
President said in an interview with journalists of the Age and
The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on Wednesday.

President Abdurahman Wahid, who is initamely called "Gus Dur",
denied an opinion saying that the eruption of riots in some
regions of the country was as an indication of separatist
movement or ethnic sentiment.

In Gus Durr's perception, a score of riots hitting Aceh, Maluku,
Papua and other regions is inseparable from an act of some
elements who are not satisfied with the new government under his
leadership.

Certain elements, who wanted to manipulate their
dissatisfaction, have resorted to a hard line approach. But they
are still capable of safeguarding national unity, Gus Dur
stressed.

Asked to specify on the name of manipulators, Gus Dur answered
that it was a small group in the military and former military
officers who still doubted the fact that the military is not
dominant anymore in Indonesia.

However the President further describe that the number o those
sitting in the military power elite who are opposed to him is
still small, while 90 percent of them have really supported the
result of the 1999 general election's result.

Gus Dur even expressed his joyness over a big number of
military and therefore he never felt scared with a rumor on a
coup by the military.
