The congress ended on Sunday with a declaration that West Papua (Irian Jaya`s other name) was no longer part of Indonesia. The five were Agustinus Alua, head of the congress organizing committee, Herman Awom, the congress` secretary, Thaha Alhamid, chief of the congress` steering committee, Don AL Flassy, head of the Papuan Independent Committee and Joh Mambor, a former political prisoner. "My clients came to the police headquarters and were questioned separately from 9.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m. on the Papuan Congress of February 23-26 and the National Congress of May 29 - June 4," the five`s attorney , Demianus Wakman, told the press. He said all his clients answered the questions but the interrogations lasted longer than scheduled in the summonses. "I came here voluntarily to clarify everything," said Flassy who had ignored a previous police summons. The summonses for Monday`s questioning were dated June 13. Another Papuan figure summoned was Theys Hiyo Eluay but he failed to turn up at the police office as he was reported to be in Surabaya, East Java, to attend the 15th National Sports Week (PON). President Abdurrahman Wahid recently stressed that the government would not recognize the results of the Papua National Congress because its organization was not in line with the agreement reached by the government and the congress` organizing committee. He vowed the government would take firm measures against any activity designed to set up an independent Papua state. Under an agreement signed by the Indonesian and Dutch governments as well as the United Nations in New York, the Dutch government handed Irian Jaya to Indonesia through the UN Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA) on October 1, 1962. Irian Jaya was officially declared part of Indonesia on May 1, 1963.
