Security ready for MPR session
JAKARTA (IO) - National Police Chief General Rusdihardjo says at
least 28,270 security forces will be deployed to safeguard
Jakarta during next month's annual session of the People's
Consultative Assembly (MPR).
The number could be increased 25% immediately if chaos breaks
out when legislators convene to listen to President
Abdurrahman's report of his administration's first nine months
in office.
"If the situation escalates into mass unrest or riots, all of
the security forces will be deployed," Rusdihardjo told
reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with regional police
chiefs yesterday.
He said the security forces guarding the MPR session will
comprise police, the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), and
civilian guards (Kamra). Police will provide 96 companies, TNI
29 companies, and Kamra 12,000 personnel.
The MPR session takes place from August 7-18. Rusdihardjo
predicted there won't be any social friction during the meeting
of the nation's top legislative body.
"The annual session needs a lot of attention, but it's no cause
for alarm," he said. Commenting on recent bomb threats in
several cities and a bomb blast in Jakarta, Rusdihardjo said
they were not the work of typical criminals.
On a separate occasion, Commander of the Navy's Western Fleet,
Vice Admiral Putu Ardana, yesterday pledged there will be no
threats from sea during the MPR general session. "We are ready
any time to launch a round-the-clock sea patrol," Ardana told
reporters.
"So far, we have not found any indication of provocateurs from
outside Jakarta entering the capital," he said.
