TNI suspicious of US marines at border

JAKARTA (IO) - The military's chief of security in East Nusa
Tenggara and Bali yesterday questioned the presence of 600 US
marines on the border area between West Timor and East Timor.

"Why should they deploy 600 marines and three warships on the
pretext of dropping off humanitarian aid and giving assistance
to development in East Timor?" Major General Kiki Syahnakri,
chief of the Bali-based Udayana regional military command, was
quoted by Antara as saying.

Speaking to journalists in the West Nusatenggara capital of
Mataram, Syahnakri said the presence of the US marines on the
border was rather questionable.

He said helicopters, carrying US troops to drop humanitarian
assistance at border areas, had trespassed into Indonesian
territory. Local Indonesian authorities have lodged protests
against the territorial intrusion and the commander of the UN
peacekeeping force in East Timor has apologized.

The deployment of the US marines to East Timor came days after
three UN aid workers, including one American, were slain in West
Timor, where their local office was attacked by evil militias on
September 6 in the town of Atambua.

Commenting on the issuance of Resolution No. 1309 by the United
Nations Security Council in relation to the Atambua massacre,
Syahnakri said the reasoning behind the resolution was mostly
misleading.

Citing an example, he referred to the claim that 20 people were
killed on September 7, which he said was totally baseless.
According to him, this was based on rumors spread by certain
parties to discredit Indonesia to make it appear that the
country is utterly incapable of overseeing security in East Nusa
Tenggara.

"These rumors then led to the issuance of the resolution with
the misleading considerations," he said.

Foreign bodies and aid groups were unable to confirm the report
that 20 people had been killed in West Timor on September 7, as
foreign humanitarian workers were fleeing the region.
