EXPERT: US TO MEET WITH DIFFICULTIES IN IMPOSING EMBARGO ON RI

Surabaya, Sept 20(ANTARA) - The United States will find
difficulties in imposing an embargo on Indonesia because of the
sheer vastness of its territory, an expert on international
relations said.

Basis Susilo, an expert on international relations at the
Surabaya-based Airlangga University, was of the opinion that
Indonesia was not like Iraq which was small in territory.

"Besides, the US government has on many occasions stated its
intention to see Indonesia become a democratic country. Now , if
Indonesia is isolated, the result will be a reversal of the
democratization process," he said.

Basis made the remarks in response to UN Defence Minister
William Cohen`s threat to clamp an embargo on Indonesia , unless
the Atambua incident was settled as expected by that country.

According to him, Indonesia has been long dependent on the US
and if an embargo is really imposed on Indonesia , it will bring
about a longer impact.

"Even if the US threat is serious, I think the US will take a
cautious step before imposing it . It would first see whether
Indonesia had really proven to overcome the refugee problem in
Atambua," he said.

Therefore, the government of Indonesia should not be afraid with
the threat, as the coordinating Minister for Social, Politics
and Security Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono himself was trying hard to
deal with the issue either at the request of the US or not.

"With Minister Susilo`s seriousness, I think the US threat will
not materialize, as Indonesia is the biggest in the Southeast
Asia region and the US itself also had a stake in
democratization in Indonesia," he said.

"Should the threat be serious, it will be the UN itself which
will suffer the losses. The process of democratization in
Indonesia will be negated," he said. (U/SBY08/SBY10/RSI-
