CALL FOR PAPERS for the

Special Session on

"Parallel and Distributed Image and Video Processing"
(ParIm '01)

Naples, Italy, September 4-7, 2001

to be held in conjunction with the
2001 International Conference on Parallel Computing
(ParCo 2001)
http://www.parco.org

Extended Papers due: June 30 2001

Motivation
----------

The International Conference on Parallel Computing ParCo
'2001, aims to provide a medium for the exchange of ideas
between theoreticians and practitioners to address the
important issues in the state-of-the-art of the development,
application and future trends in parallel computing,
including recent developments in cluster and metacomputing.

A special session of the conference is devoted to "Parallel
and Distributed Image and Video Processing". In recent years
much attention has been paid to the computing with visual
data as a key technology in many areas. However, the creation,
processing and management of these data types require an
enormous computational effort, often too high for single
processor architectures. Therefore, this fact taken together
with inherent data parallelism in these data types makes image
processing, video processing and multimedia natural
application areas for parallel and distributed computing.

Our goal within this session is to provide a forum for
researchers from all of these communities to present and
exchange ideas on the latest research results in parallel
and distributed image and video processing, in order to give
an overview of the state-of-the-art of the developments,
applications and future trends.

We intend this session to cover a range of domains, from more
traditional ones such as image analysis at low, medium and
high level on multiprocessor architectures, to parallel
multimedia image processing and retrieval, to soft-computing
techniques in parallel image processing.

Scope
-----

We solicit abstracts of original research including, but not
limited to, the following areas:

* Parallel algorithms for digital image processing, coding and
  encryption
* Parallel algorithms for video content-based indexing and
  retrieval
* Advanced techniques for parallel image and video processing:
  soft-computing, quantum computing, etc.
* Parallel and distributed architectures for image and video
  processing and retrieval
* Coprocessors and multimedia Instructions Set Architecture
  extensions
* Special purpose circuits and systems for MPEG codecs and
digital imaging for films and television
* Performance evaluation
* Multimedia data analysis and visualization: texture, color,
  content, etc.
* Applications, i.e. face recognition, event detection,
  lip-reading analysis, interactive human-machine vision,
  vehicles guidance, etc.

All these topics are usually investigated and probed
independently from each other and making use of different
assumptions and techniques. The organizers believe it is
necessary to enforce a higher level of cross-interaction
among these issues, making use of all the computational tools
we have available. Moreover, special attention will be given
to application domains. We hope, also, to be able to discuss
some application cases where to verify the basic ideas emerged
in the literature and in the session's discussion itself.

Submission
----------

Authors are invited to submit 5-page extended abstracts that
demonstrate original and unpublished research in the areas of
parallel image and video processing. All submissions should be
sent to Dr. A. Petrosino by e-mail, in PostScript or PDF
format, to the address [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Common compression utilities (such as gzip, compress, or
winzip) can be used. To download the template files (LaTeX,
Word, etc.) please visit the site of the conference
http://www.parco.org.
One of the authors will be required to attend the session and
present the work.

Publication
-----------

Selected submissions will be considered for publishing in the
upcoming special issue of the journal "Parallel Computing",
published by Elsevier.
