CALL FOR PAPERS Parallel Computing - An International Journal Special Issue on "Parallel and Distributed Image and Video Processing" Guest editors: Luisa D'Amore, University of Naples, Italy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Alain Merigot, Universite' de Paris-Sud, Orsay, France [EMAIL PROTECTED] Alfredo Petrosino, CPS-National Research Council, Italy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Aim and scope In recent years much attention has been paid to the computing with visual data as a key technology in many areas. However, the creation, processing and management of these data types require an enormous computational effort, often too high for single processor architectures. Therefore, this fact taken together with inherent data parallelism in these data types makes image processing, video processing and multimedia natural application areas for parallel and distributed computing. This special issue will focus on the most notable aspects of parallel and distributed image and video processing, in order to give an overview of the state-of-the-art of the developments, applications and future trends. We intend this special issue to cover a range of domains, from more traditional ones such as image analysis at low, medium and high level on multiprocessor architectures, to parallel multimedia image processing and retrieval. Specifically: * Parallel algorithms for digital image processing, coding and encryption * Parallel algorithms for video content-based indexing and retrieval * Advanced techniques for parallel image and video processing * Parallel and distributed architectures for image and video processing and retrieval * Coprocessors and multimedia Instructions Set Architecture extensions * Special purpose circuits and systems for MPEG codecs and digital imaging for films and television * Performance evaluation * Multimedia data analysis and visualization: texture, color, content, etc. * Applications, i.e. visual surveillance, face recognition, vehicles guidance, etc. All submitted papers will be peer reviewed for originality, technical contents and relevance to the theme of the special issue. Only high-quality, previously unpublished papers will be accepted for publication in the Special Issue---in accordance with the Parallel Computing guidelines. Instructions for authors can be found at: http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/parco The complete manuscript either in pdf or ps version should be sent by email or by ordinary mail in 5 copies to the address below by the deadline of 30th November 2001. Please include a cover page containing full contact details and e-mail address.
