Abstract: ------------ A lot of the recent innovations in Cloud and DevOps has been driven by features of container technology (immutable infrastructure, precise environment packaging, lightweight execution). In this talk we'll explore whether there are still features of container technology in linux (whether implemented or planned) which can provide additional avenues for research in the cloud. Of particular interest is the desire (not fully realised by docker) to transition from infrastructure to application containers while still retaining the precise environment guarantees. We'll also examine some of the container features propagating into linux which are not designed to support docker like containers and ask if there's a way these technologies can be incorporated as well. Speaker's short Bio: -------------------------- James Bottomley is a Distinguished Engineer at IBM Research where he works on Cloud and Container technology. He is also Linux Kernel maintainer of the SCSI subsystem. He has been a Director on the Board of the Linux Foundation and Chair of its Technical Advisory Board. He went to university at Cambridge for both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees after which he joined AT&T Bell labs to work on Distributed Lock Manager technology for clustering. In 2000 he helped found SteelEye Technology, a High availability company for Linux and Windows, becoming Vice President and CTO. He joined Novell in 2008 as a Distinguished Engineer at Novell's SUSE Labs, Parallels (later Odin) in 2011 as CTO of Server Virtualization and IBM Research in 2016. ======================================================================= Workshop Program: Date: April 4, 2017, Time: 13:30 - 17:20 13:30 - 14:30 Keynote talk by Dr. James Bottomley, IBM Research: "Has the Container Wave Finished breaking over Cloud?" 14:30 - 15:00 Maximilien de Bayser and Renato Fontoura de Gusmão Cerqueira, IBM Research Brazil: "Integrating MPI with docker for HPC" 15:00 - 15:30 Shripad Nadgowda, Sahil Suneja and Ali Kanso, IBM Research: "Comparing Scaling Methods for Linux Containers" 15:30 - 16:00 Break 16:00 - 16:30 Antonio Brogi, Davide Neri and Jacopo Soldani, University of Pisa, Italy: "DockerFinder: Multi-attribute search of Docker images" 16:30 - 17:00 Abdulrahman Azab, University of Oslo, Norway: "Enabling Docker Containers for High-Performance and Many-Task Computing" 17:00 - 17:20 Closing notes
