OK. I traced this to a bit of stupidity (as I expected) on my part and how I was querying the data in Grafana.
For those wondering or come upon this thread with myself, the trick was to "SELECT *" and using the column mapping in their annotations interface. The docs on annotations says "If you only select one column you will not need to enter anything in the column mapping fields." I was originally selecting on one column so I didn't do any mappings.
