Thanks for the response. I'm using https://github.com/influxdata/influxdb-java this java driver to send new points to influx. Just for kicks I did have a machine with 32GB try to start the database and that works. The data/schema looks ok so I think the points are probably being translated correctly to line protocol by the driver. The last element of the UID is actually an unchanging identifier number for the sensor, so it won't be changing.
