The data is a regular stream, but as we're talking about between 2 and 50 
messages per second it's nowhere near the volumes you mention. 

If what you say is true (and to me it sounds pretty sensible!) I'd like someone 
to InfluxData to confirm that and/or add something about the volumes/interval 
recommendations for that specific setting to the documentation. I'm going to 
experiment on a test server with much lower values to see what it does with the 
system load. 

As it is I only use a single tag (d) with about 600 different values 
(identifiers of devices) in a total of four measurements. Given the situation 
(and the fact that this number will keep on growing) I'm afraid I won't be able 
to reduce the cardinality any further.
