What is the output of "SHOW RETENTION POLICIES on <database>"? It sounds like you probably unset the retention policy as the DEFAULT policy, and the reads are going elsewhere.
You can also explicitly specify the RP in your queries, so "SELECT foo FROM database.retenion_policy.measurement WHERE...".
