I just found that I have to backfill it myself with an into clause.  

I did this

SELECT count(*) INTO r1metrics..dailyTasks FROM r1metrics..tasks where time < 
now() GROUP BY time(1d), * 

and it worked.  Influx handles the duplicates by overwriting them
