Hi,

I've tried to install AFS 3.4beta on one of our
SGI 5.3 machines and run into some trouble. A side
effect of the trouble was, that /usr/vice/etc was
not complete (no ThisCell and CellServDB file).

This machine was configured to be an AFS 3.3a machine
however, every configuration file (afsclient, afsserver
and afsml) was set "off". Thus, I assume, that there
is *no* AFS functionality on the machine.

Well, when invoking rlogin it runs into an "internal
failure: ta_rauth" which is very strange, since AFS is
configured to be off ...

The problem could be solved by providing ThisCell and
CellServDB in directory /usr/vice/etc.

To sum up: I believe this is a bug in SGI's login
program which does check for /usr/vice/etc and assumes
that this indicates the machine to be an AFS machine.
It would be better to check the configuration flags.

Peter Mueller
