The voice mail you left yesterday asked that I try the suggestions
offered by some of the info-afs subscribers, in an effort to find a
temporary solution to my problem. I have done that. In specific, I
tried the suggestion from Mark Dapoz which said to define the default
for SYSTEM in /etc/security/user to be:

                SYSTEM = "AFS OR compat"

instead of what Transarc says to use which is

        SYSTEM = "AFS OR ( AFS [UNAVAIL] AND compat [SUCCESS] )"

This appears to be a bypass for us since people with only Unix
passwords can now login to aix 4.1.4. However, we are uncomfortable
following this solution since we don't understand all its
ramifications and it is not what Transarc has described in their
Release Notes. We feel it is very important for Transarc to follow
this up and provide a definitive statement of what needs to be done
to provide unix accounts access to aix 4.1.4 machines running afs
3.4a. Thanks to all who responded.
