    Indeed, the info they need is right there in the fstab and
    vfsck surely already has routines that know how to read it.

A partial workaround is to order your /vicepX names to avoid it
as much as possible:

    /vicepc   rz2a          /vicepc   rz1a
    /vicepd   rz3a          /vicepd   rz1b
