CDE has pluggable authentication modules (pam) which will allow one to
provide a different back-end authentication method.
Sun says that in Solaris 2.5, the pam is a private interface and should
not be used. I'm not sure what IBM or HP have to say about this.
As vendors start to support pam, I suspect that needing source code for
the login program will be unnecessary.
Running the old XDM works just fine btw. All you do is replace the generic
Xsession with the CDE one.
