Try using the the backup labeltape -pname This will assign a permanent
name to the tape, which you can write on the outside of the tape as
well. You can then use a scratch pool concept.

Mainframes have been doing this since the 50s, it only took UNIX 40
years to get the idea. Are these permanent names recorded in a ANSI
standard volume label by any chance? Or would that have been to much
to expect?
