How about this:
a) create a new volume
b) mount it and set an quota equal to the quota on "subdir"s volume
c) copy all files/dirs from the problematic volume _except_ for
the subdir (you can't delete).
d) unmount both the problematic and new volumes
e) mount the new volume at the old mountpoint
f) delete the problematic volume
