we had a similar problem on a Sparc 20 running Solaris 2.4. the
problem seems to be that vold leaves the directory tree in an
inconsistent state if you just kill it, and that causes the
csh (and it's variants) to hang when you try to log in.

this happened a while ago, so i don't remember details. i think
our solution was to disable /etc/init.d/vold so vold never gets
   started on the system.

beckman says:
< OK! I got tcsh to work -- just needed to upgrade. I guess (I can't
< confirm the version of tcsh I had) that my version of tcsh didn't work with
< AFS, and after I upgraded to 6.06, BING! I'm in. BUT, now a new problem
< has surfaced. This is probably just a SOLARIS thing, so for the rest of
< you, read on if you want.
<
< vold, the daemon that takes care of volumes on the system, well, I kill it
< so I can listen to CD's on my CD player. BUT, if I try to log in without
< vold running, BZZT! I can't get in to my home directory in the afs cell.
< But, I can get in if I use my /export/share/beckman home directory (put in
< the /etc/passwd file).
<
< Tell me this -- why does vold need to be running (does NFS stuff)? As I am
< writing this, I just solved why my CD player was saying it was busy... in
< /vol/dev/rdsk there was a directory called c0t6d0/ (the cd player)... also
< in /vol/dev/dsk/c0t6d0/. I rmdir'ed them, and kill -1 vold, and it seemed
< not to mind so much about the CD player.
<
< So running vold isn't bad. I would, however, like to know why it needs to
< be running for me to log in my afs cell home directory, rather than my home
< directory on my internal drive.
<
< A BIG thanks to all who wrote back on the tcsh and AFS problem - once
< again, I just needed an upgrade of tcsh to above 6.01 (thanks to you who
< wrote me about that! It worked.).
