I've had some rather curious experiences building xemacs and
emacs on IRIX 5.3, and I was wondering if anyone else has had similar
problems (namely, if AFS is a factor).
I can build emacs 19.31 and xemacs 19.14 just fine on IRIX 5.2
systems (well, not just fine, but if you build in /tmp the computer
won't crash ;-) and the resulting binary works fine on 5.2 and 5.3
systems. I used gcc 2.7.2 and X11R6.1 for the builds. If I build
on 5.3, it builds but the binary segfaults. I tried both cc and gcc
and both vendor (R6) and local (R6.1) X distributions on 5.3, and no
permutation works.
I know that both emacs and xemacs can be built on IRIX 5.3
systems because I have seen pre-built binaries. So I was wondering if
there might an AFS-related problem. It would be nice if we could
solve this problem since it oterhwise requires keeping a 5.2 build
machine around indefinitely.

                        yours,
                                Larry Schwimmer
