Tom -

I suggest you look into the PC-Enterprise/PC-Interface product
from Platinum technologies. It provides PC & (sometime soon) Mac
access to AFS, DFS and NFS simultaneously through a translator.
This product has MANY advantages over the AFS->NFS->PC-NFS-client
approach, with performance and flexibility coming close to the top of the
list.

The Platinum folks are pretty free with evaluation copies of their
software so you should be able to try before you buy.

I can't give a blanket endorsement because we only have a small
installed base using the product. There are still some questions
about scalability (#clients/gateway, size of gateway, etc.) which we
will be working on. Also, I have not seen an NT version but have
heard that it is under development.

Try http://www.platinum.com and http://www.locus.com/products
for the sales info.

Hope this helps. Good luck,

Subject: Win NT NFS clients and AFS to NFS translator

1) I have installed Hummingbird Communication's NFS client (called
NFS Maestro) on both Windows NT and Windows 95 (ver 5.1).
After mounting the /afs filesystem exported from an AIX box running
the AFS to NFS tranlator, I experience the following problems:

- If a directory is in the root of an AFS volume, a dir listing
takes a minimum of 90 seconds to complete.

- Reads on files in these directories seem to hang indefinitely.

- Haven't tried writes in these directories.

It seems any operation involving the root of a volume takes a really
long time, or doesn't complete at all.

On the other hand, I have been able to do pretty much anything
in directories that are at least 1 directory below the root of a
volume. Of course there are exceptions: a dir on a large
directory that was one directory below a volume mount point
just hung.

So, has anybody experienced this before? AND/OR can you recommend
a NFS client for Windows NT and/or 95 which you have seen
seemlessly mount and use the export(s) from an AFS to NFS translator
machine.

2) I would like to be able to mount /afs/btv or /afs/btv.ibm.com,
where btv.ibm.com is my local cell. By the NFS standard, I should
be able to mount any directory underneath the exported directory,
as long as they are on the same file-system.....
[uh, err, I think answered my own question: practically every directory
in /afs is a mount point to the root of the various cells, so
exporting /afs doesn't export these volumes/filesystems as well.
If the AFS to NFS server explicitly exports /afs/btv.ibm.com, then
I should be able to do what I want, right?]
This means Windows File Manager or Explorer won't choke on the root of
the particular "afs" drive, since the root of cells aren't usually
   as nebulous as /afs.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tom
